E-Waste Awareness (Indian Government Policy)

E-waste, or electronic waste, refers to discarded electronic products nearing the end of their useful life, such as mobile phones, laptops, televisions, and household appliances. Improper disposal of e-waste can lead to severe environmental and health hazards due to the presence of toxic substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium.

To address the growing concern of e-waste, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in India has formulated and implemented the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016. These rules are designed to ensure the environmentally sound management of e-waste and to promote recycling and reuse of valuable materials.

Key Highlights of the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016:

• Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Producers of electronic goods are required to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products, including take-back, recycling, and final disposal.
• Collection and Recycling Targets: Producers must meet specific collection and recycling targets, ensuring that a significant portion of e-waste is properly managed.
• Authorized E-Waste Recyclers: Only authorized dismantlers and recyclers, who follow environmentally sound practices, are permitted to handle e-waste.
• Consumer Awareness Programs: Producers are mandated to create awareness among consumers regarding the proper disposal and recycling of e-waste. This includes information on collection centers and take-back schemes.
• E-Waste Collection Centers: Establishment of e-waste collection centers to facilitate the easy and safe disposal of electronic waste by consumers.
